minimalist vs maximalist

I think we are living in a time where minimalism - defined as a style or approach that uses a small number of elements - is pushed really hard to us from every direction. From fashion to living room styles to paint colors and dinner recipes we are in a very ‘less is more’ time in society. I would argue that your wedding is the perfect time to explore a more is more approach if that is something that appeals to you at all. While I think there is a time and place for minimalism and love plenty of weddings that go the simple route, I think sometimes weddings with a lot of elements can get a bad rap.

Elements I would have you consider here can include:

  • Linens

  • Tableware

  • Glasses

  • Flatware

  • Centerpieces

  • Table numbers

  • Floral installations

  • Chairs

  • Seating chart

  • Signage + invitations

  • Favors

  • Lighting and anything else that comes to mind!

There really is not one right or wrong way to approach the design of your wedding as long as it reflects who you and your partner are and you share the vision that is most important to you!

No matter what you decide, exploring what feels most like you and your partner is the important part of the process. Whether you choose what’s trending most on wedding TikTok or mimic what your downtown apartment looks like, you won’t regret choosing an aesthetic that has your friends and family saying “omg this is so them” the entire day.

When starting to think about your day, I suggest sitting down and making a list of the elements that are really important to you - 5-10 things that you definitely will not want to live without at your wedding.

If all of this feels increasingly overwhelming I want to tell you two things - one that’s totally normal. Weddings have a lot of moving parts to them, I think it’s completely valid to feel a little in over your head at different points throughout the planning process. Two - it’s ok to ask for help. There are so many different types of help from someone to design your entire day and see it through to the end, to ‘day of coordinators’ that help bring the vision you create to life, to even teams of people that will help you with set-up and tear-down. There are also a ton of free resources - places like Pinterest, wedding TikTok, and Facebook groups are wonderful places to start. And be sure to join our Facebook group if you are a GG couple looking to connect with other couples - both past and present that got married at Gordon Green!
